From a Late-Night Conversation to 30 Years of Changing Lives A Q&A with PlaySmart co-founder Kevin Kavanagh
PlaySmart Inc. is a nonprofit that helps 5th–8th graders reach their academic and life potential through sports. Since 2013, the PlaySmart Academy has called Rye Country Day School home every summer — thanks in large part to co-founder and Rye resident Kevin Kavanagh, who has volunteered with the organization since its founding in 1997.
We sat down with Kevin to hear the story in his own words.
How did PlaySmart get started?
“PlaySmart was founded in 1997 by me and several friends who all played sports at Princeton. Our goal was to provide organized sports programs to kids who might not otherwise have access to them.”
How did it land in Rye?
“When my family moved here, my wife Amanda and I started fundraising and looking for partnership opportunities. We found Rye Country Day School, and PlaySmart Academy launched in 2013. It’s been a family affair — Amanda ensures the kids get a healthy lunch every day, and all four of my daughters have served as volunteer counselors.”
What does the community support mean to you?
“It’s truly humbling. So many people in Rye have contributed — not just financially, but as coaches, guest speakers, lunch servers, and bus monitors.”
What’s next for PlaySmart?
“I’m excited to see PlaySmart continue here in Rye what started 30 years ago as just an idea in a late-night conversation among friends.”
